The Probation Department took almost 22,000 traffic violators in hand last year, with about one in every three of them taken on visits to morgues. With the traffic safety campaign underway for the Songkran festival this week, Narat Sawetanant, director-general of the Probation Department, revealed on Monday the agency disciplined 21,944 traffic offenders last year. In addition, 4,615 people were put through a course on traffic rules, 1,510 on religion, and 791 on the dangers of alcoholic beverages. Blood donations were required from 277 offending drivers while 243 others were tasked with cleaning hospitals and some with cleaning at the Poh Teck Tung rescue foundation. The Probation Department was participating in the government's road safety campaign, and was proposing longer hours of community service and other social contributions for traffic violators, Mr Narat said.
